Modular Laboratories provide a flexible approach for delivering advanced levels of containment. They are utilized to support the wide range of laboratory operations that are traditionally carried out in fixed-site buildings, thereby enhancing or expanding capabilities and allowing for faster deployment. Additionally, modular labs can deliver heightened bio-containment, particularly to regions where the infrastructure previously did not support these labs.

The modular lab can be manufactured and installed in a variety of configurations:

Buildings:  An advanced modular laboratory provides both primary and secondary containment systems and may be constructed to operate and appear as a standard building. These structures, combined with their integrated, advanced HVAC systems and biosafety equipment serve as the foundation for the demands of diverse applications including operations up to BSL-3.

Containerized Units: The modular lab, built from ISO shipping containers, is an ideal international solution for deploying high levels of containment anywhere.  This type of modular laboratory is built into special intermodal containers that allow for easy global shipment.  They offer a turn-key solution that is easily transportable to even the most remote locations. These units are also useful for specific applications such as work with Tuberculosis.

The most complex component of any BSL-3 lab, especially a mobile or modular laboratory are the HVAC and air filtration systems and pressure controls.  Many new technologies have been developed that make these advanced modular labs a viable and practical option.

It is imperative that modular labs used for biosafety be manufactured from superior materials to ensure a high level of safety and security.
