| Research Gloveboxes / Isolators GERMFREE offers the most complete line of Gloveboxes and Isolators. GERMFREE sold its first Isolator in 1962 and our extensive product line continues to evolve. During this period, the terminology related to the use of gloveboxes and isolators has greatly expanded and a number of definitions have become somewhat fuzzy and sometimes contradictory. We believe that use of the term "barrier" by itself and in various combinations has caused much of this confusion. This is because a barrier can be positive or negative pressure and range greatly in the degree of separation of the inside of the chamber from the outside environment. To avoid confusion, we choose not to use the term "barrier" to name, describe or classify this equipment. In general, and specifically as used on this web site, Gloveboxes are primarily operated under negative pressure for containment and operation protection, while isolators are usually positive pressure chambers that protect the product. GERMFREE's line of stainless steel Gloveboxes can be used for both applications. Therefore, we frequently use the designation Glovebox/Isolator. Protecting the environment is not considered in many definitions, but the majority of GERMFREE's Gloveboxes and Isolators do this. Equipment is available offering varying combinations of protection for personnel, product and environment, including protection of all three. In general, operating under positive or negative pressure will determine the bias of protection.
