FSHP 52nd Annual Meeting

August 3-5, 2018 – Orlando, FL

“Break Through, Branch Out” is the theme for the Florida Society of Health-System Pharmacists’ (FSHP) 52nd Annual Meeting, held this year from August 3-5 at the Hilton Bonnet Creek in Orlando, FL.

The weekend event kicks off with keynote speaker Gary Johnson, Pharm.D., MHA, Chief Pharmacy Officer with the University of Kentucky in Nicholasville, KY. Johnson will be presenting Sleeping Giant – The Future of Pharmacy in Healthcare at 7:35 a.m., August 3rd.

Some of the weekend topics on the agenda include:

Medication Safety Focus on High Alert Medications and Just Culture; presented by Natasha Nicol, Pharm.D., FASHP, Director, Global Patient Safety Affairs for Cardinal Health

Navigating the Regulatory Alphabet Soup; presented by Dave Lacknauth, Pharm.D., MBA, MS, Director of Pharmacy Services and System Integration for Broward Health

New Drugs; presented by Steve Walden, Pharm.D., MPH, Manager, DUE Clinical Implementation with WellCare Health Plans

Hurricane Maria: Disaster Preparedness and Recovery Lessons Learned: A Pharmacist’s Perspective; presented by Brian Hierholzer, Pharm.D., Clinical Assistant Professor with Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy

Drug Shortages: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly; presented by Margaretta L. Kearson, Pharm.D., BCPS, Clinical Pharmacy Manager with Memorial Regional Hospital

Pharmacy Ethics (An overview of recent items that have come to the Florida Board of Pharmacy regarding pharmacy technicians, and how the Board determines sanctions); presented by Mark Mikhael, Pharm.D., Vice President of Operations with ProHealth Pharmacy Solutions/Florida Board of Pharmacy

An increased focus on opioids stands out this year with respect to the growing addiction crisis in the U.S., with several discussions scheduled to help pharmacists and medical practitioners understand the complexities of the issue and find solutions.

Some of these presentations include a discussion on naloxone availability, administration, dosing strategies, and alternative pain management options in the emergency department, by Ruben Santiago, Pharm.D., from Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL; identifying non-opioid options, by Amanda Waltemath, Pharm.D., MPH; and best practices for prescribing, dispensing, and preventing drug diversion, by Susan Langston, Diversion Program Manager with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Miami Field Office.

Attendants will have the opportunity to earn continuing education credits; up to 19 hours for pharmacists and up to 20 hours for technicians.
