A Modular ABSL-3 Facility to House Large Animals in Cages for Disease Surveillance and Research on Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) and Other Emerging Risk Group 3 Materials
Our client approached us seeking a modular facility to house large animals in cages for disease surveillance and research on highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and other emerging risk group 3 materials. We were able to work with our client to develop a customized solution that met their specific needs a one-of-its-kind facility in Singapore.
Project features
Size: 5 modules
Layout configurations: BSL-3 Ag laboratory
Facilities/Equipment: BSL-3 modular facility
Features: APR doors, necropsy suite, cage washing station, tissue digester, large double door autoclaves for hazardous waste management, EDS waste management system
The challenge
One of the challenges of this project was ensuring ongoing support for the facility. To address this, we maintained a service office in Singapore to provide ongoing support for the client. Additionally, Germfree will be relocating the facility to a new location in 2023.
The answer
Our solution was a 5-module ABSL-3 facility that provided approximately 5,400 sq. ft. of laboratory and mechanical space. We incorporated several key features into the facility, including APR doors, a necropsy suite, a cage washing station, a tissue digester, and large double door autoclaves for hazardous waste management. This allowed for efficient and effective research and surveillance while maintaining the necessary biosafety and biosecurity measures.
ABSL-3 Facility product details
The BSL-3ag Animal Research Laboratory that Germfree designed and built for Duke University and the National University of Singapore is a one-of-a-kind facility in Singapore. Since its installation in 2014, the facility has maintained recertification every year, demonstrating its ability to meet the highest standards of biosafety and biosecurity.
The facility is certified and licensed by the biosafety branch of the Singapore ministry, ensuring that it adheres to all necessary regulations and guidelines. In fact, the facility was the first in the region to isolate SARS-CoV-2, which is a testament to the high level of expertise and care that went into its design and construction.
We are proud to have been a part of such an important project and to have contributed to the fight against infectious diseases. Our team worked tirelessly to design and build a facility that met the unique needs of our clients and the requirements of biosafety and biosecurity. We continue to support the facility through our service office in Singapore and look forward to seeing the ongoing impact of the research being conducted within its walls.
