Revolutionizing Mobile Laboratories for Rapid Response to Infectious Disease Outbreaks with our Mobile BSL-3 Laboratory
In 2020, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) experienced a surge in COVID-19 cases, prompting the Abu Dhabi Public Health Center (ADPHC) to seek a flexible solution for diagnostic testing. ADPHC partnered with Germfree Laboratories to design and build a state-of-the-art mobile BSL-3 laboratory tailored to the specific needs of the UAE.
Size: 53′ Tractor Trailer
Layout configurations: BSL2 / BSL3 (Laboratory)
Facilities/Equipment: Class III BSC
Features: Integrated Germfree equipment and case work
The traditional approach of sending samples to central laboratories proved time-consuming and logistically challenging during the rapidly evolving pandemic.
The mobile BSL-3 laboratory has demonstrated its versatility and effectiveness in diagnosing infectious diseases in the United Arab Emirates. It has been deployed in various locations throughout the country, including remote areas where traditional laboratory facilities are not available. The lab has not only played a critical role in the UAE’s response to COVID-19, but has also been used to diagnose other infectious diseases such as MERS-CoV and Ebola. With Germfree’s ongoing support, the mobile BSL-3 laboratory is poised to continue making a significant impact in the UAE and beyond.
Germfree not only manufactured the mobile laboratory but also provided comprehensive services, including 24/7/365 remote communication capabilities and scheduled visits. Germfree’s expertise in designing and manufacturing mobile laboratories has enabled them to provide a highly specialized and reliable solution to their clients. By offering comprehensive services, Germfree ensures that their clients can focus on their core business, secure in the knowledge that their laboratory equipment is running smoothly and efficiently. In addition to their technical support, Germfree’s commitment to quality and safety has earned them a reputation as a trusted provider of mobile laboratory solutions.
Ongoing training is provided to site staff during scheduled visits so they can support the lab even when Germfree staff are not in-country. This training is reinforced by technical service specialists in the U.S. and established subcontractors.
How we helped
Housed in a custom-built truck trailer, we manufactured a completely self-sufficient laboratory that had its own power, water supply, and waste management system. The facility also had state-of-the-art equipment, including PCR machines, sample processing equipment and biocontainment hoods, and could be quickly deployed to a variety of locations, including hospitals, clinics and airports.
The mobile laboratory will be a Reference Laboratory for Infectious Diseases, Abu Dhabi (RLID-AD), in times of outbreaks, to augment the screening and diagnostic capacities of communicable diseases in the emirate. ADPHC’s BSL-3 mobile laboratory in the United Arab Emirates demonstrates the potential of innovative solutions to address infectious disease challenges. As the world continues to face new and emerging infectious diseases, the importance of innovative solutions like the mobile BSL-3 laboratory cannot be overstated. By investing in new technologies and approaches to healthcare delivery, the UAE was able to respond effectively to the COVID-19 pandemic and strengthen its preparedness for future crises.
