The mobile BSL-3 laboratory has demonstrated its versatility and effectiveness in diagnosing infectious diseases in the United Arab Emirates. It has been deployed in various locations throughout the country, including remote areas where traditional laboratory facilities are not available. The lab has not only played a critical role in the UAE’s response to COVID-19, but has also been used to diagnose other infectious diseases such as MERS-CoV and Ebola. Germfree not only manufactured the mobile laboratory but also provided comprehensive services, including 24/7/365 remote communication capabilities and scheduled visits. Ongoing training is provided to site staff during scheduled visits so they can support the lab even when Germfree staff are not in-country. This training is reinforced by technical service specialists in the U.S. and established subcontractors.

Housed in a custom-built truck trailer, we manufactured a completely self-sufficient laboratory that had its own power, water supply, and waste management system. The facility also had state-of-the-art equipment, including PCR machines, sample processing equipment and biocontainment hoods, and could be quickly deployed to a variety of locations, including hospitals, clinics and airports.

The mobile laboratory will be a Reference Laboratory for Infectious Diseases, Abu Dhabi (RLID-AD), in times of outbreaks, to augment the screening and diagnostic capacities of communicable diseases in the emirate.
