Built to Mobilize Biocontainment Advancements Worldwide
Germfree’s bioGO® mobile laboratory facilities for biocontainment are designed and built in accordance with the CDC NIH BMBL guidelines for BSL-2 or BSL-3 laboratories, as well as the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. These facilities are engineered to meet or exceed these strict guidelines.
The primary use of mobile biocontainment labs is for disease surveillance, which involves collecting samples quickly and analyzing them in the field. Mobile biocontainment laboratories are also the most effective way to minimize biocontainment risks by keeping samples isolated from the main facility.
Germfree is the sole provider of biocontainment facilities with integrated containment equipment. Our expertise in custom Class III Biosafety cabinets for handling hazardous samples, EDS systems, integrated autoclaves, VHP decontamination, and more is well-documented within our mobile platform.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
- What is a mobile biocontainment laboratory?
A mobile biocontainment laboratory is a fully self-contained, off-site fabricated facility built within a mobile platform, designed to deliver rapid, deployable BSL-2 or BSL-3 containment capacity wherever it is needed. Unlike permanent facilities that require years of planning and construction, a mobile lab arrives on-site with all critical systems pre-integrated, including HVAC, MEP, and containment infrastructure, and can be operational in a fraction of the time. This makes it especially valuable for outbreak response, field surveillance, and surge capacity support. The facility is engineered to meet the same biosafety standards as a permanent installation, with containment integrity, pressure relationships, and decontamination systems built in from the ground up.
- What are typical use cases for mobile biocontainment labs?
Mobile biocontainment laboratories are deployed wherever rapid, flexible, or remote BSL-2 or BSL-3 capacity is needed. In disease response and surveillance, they enable on-the-ground diagnostic and research capability during outbreaks, allowing teams to operate near affected areas rather than transporting samples to a distant fixed facility. In aerobiology research, they support controlled study of airborne biological agents in field or near-field environments. Government, military, and public health agencies also rely on them for threat assessment, agent characterization, and emergency preparedness. Academic institutions and contract research organizations use them for temporary or satellite BSL-3 capacity without committing to a permanent facility build.
- What mobile platforms are available?
Mobile biocontainment laboratories are available across three off-site built platforms, each suited to different operational requirements. The 53-foot semi-trailer is the largest option, offering approximately 450 square feet of laboratory space and accommodating complex BSL-3 configurations including anteroom and full exhaust layouts. The 24-foot Sprinter Van provides a compact, highly maneuverable option operable by a standard licensed driver, ideal for locations inaccessible to a full semi-trailer. A 24-foot cargo trailer offers a middle-ground solution balancing moderate capacity with ease of transport. Platform selection is driven by biosafety level, workflow complexity, site access, and whether the unit will be frequently relocated or semi-permanently stationed.
- What regulatory guidance informs the mobile lab design?
Mobile biocontainment laboratories are designed in accordance with the CDC/NIH Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) guidelines, the primary framework for BSL-2 and BSL-3 facility design in the United States. Internationally, facilities are aligned with WHO laboratory biosafety guidelines, supporting deployment in global public health and outbreak response contexts. BSL-3 configurations meet stringent requirements for directional airflow, 100% exhaust HVAC, sealed penetrations, liquid-disinfection-compatible surfaces, and access control. Achieving these standards within a mobile platform requires additional engineering consideration for structural integrity, vibration resistance, utility flexibility, and post-deployment containment verification.
- What are standard layout options?
Layout configurations vary by platform size and biosafety level, with several standard options available for common operational scenarios. BSL-2 applications typically use a recirculating layout with HEPA-filtered air, making the unit more energy-efficient and mechanically simpler to deploy. BSL-3 configurations on the 53-foot semi-trailer include a dedicated anteroom leading into the main laboratory, establishing required personnel and material flow controls. The BSL-3 lab operates on 100% single-pass exhaust air with no recirculation, and maintained pressure differentials ensure directional airflow away from personnel at all times. All layouts can be further customized based on intended agents, workflows, and equipment requirements.
