Premium Quality, Superior Product Protection
Our Horizontal Laminar Flow Hood products are USP 797 compliant and designed for the handling of sterile products in an aseptic working environment. The work area is continuously bathed with positive pressure ISO 5/Class 100 horizontal laminar flow air that has passed through a High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter. This filter removes organisms and particulates 0.3 micron in size with an efficiency of 99.99%. The laminar airflow principle consists of moving individual streams of unidirectional, ultra-clean air along parallel lines with minimal turbulence. The HEPA filter is positioned in the rear of the work area and is protected by a removable, perforated stainless steel diffuser.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
- What is a horizontal laminar flow hood and how does it work?
A horizontal laminar flow hood is a clean air workstation used in sterile compounding environments to protect products and materials from airborne contamination. It works by pulling room air through a pre-filter and then through a HEPA filter, which removes 99.99% of particles and organisms 0.3 microns or larger, before releasing the purified air as a continuous stream of positive pressure, unidirectional airflow that flows horizontally from the rear of the unit toward the operator. The HEPA filter is positioned at the back of the work area and protected by a removable perforated stainless steel diffuser, ensuring the work surface is continuously bathed in ISO 5/Class 100 clean air with minimal turbulence. Because the airflow moves toward the user rather than away from them, horizontal laminar flow hoods are designed exclusively for non-hazardous sterile compounding. Horizontal Laminar Flow Hood’s protect the product, not the operator.
- What is the difference between a horizontal and vertical laminar flow hood?
The primary difference between a horizontal and vertical laminar flow hood is the direction of HEPA-filtered airflow across the work surface. In a horizontal hood, air flows from the rear of the unit forward toward the operator, while in a vertical hood, air is discharged from the top and flows downward toward the work surface before being drawn into return vents. Both configurations maintain ISO Class 5 conditions within the work zone, but horizontal hoods tend to offer more consistent airflow uniformity and are less susceptible to disruption from the operator’s hand and arm movements during compounding. The right choice depends on your specific workflow, the drugs being compounded, and your facility’s regulatory requirements.
- What is the difference between USP <797> and USP <800> and which hood do I need?
USP <797> establishes standards for the preparation of all compounded sterile preparations, covering environmental quality, beyond-use dating, personnel training, and contamination control to ensure patient safety. USP <800> focuses specifically on the safe handling of hazardous drugs across the entire drug-use process, from receipt and storage through compounding and disposal. For non-hazardous sterile compounding, a horizontal laminar flow hood that meets USP <797> requirements is typically the appropriate choice. However, if your facility handles hazardous drugs as defined by USP <800>, you will need a containment primary engineering control such as a biological safety cabinet or a containment ventilated enclosure.
- When should I choose a horizontal laminar flow hood over a biosafety cabinet?
A horizontal laminar flow hood is the right choice when your compounding work involves non-hazardous sterile preparations that require product protection but do not pose an inhalation or exposure risk to the operator. Unlike a biosafety cabinet, which is designed to protect both the product and the user from hazardous materials, a horizontal laminar flow hood directs HEPA-filtered air toward the operator, making it unsuitable for any work involving hazardous drugs, cytotoxics, or biological agents. If your facility is compounding standard IV preparations, ophthalmic solutions, or other non-hazardous sterile compounds, a horizontal laminar flow hood offers a cost-effective, high-performance solution that meets USP <797> environmental requirements. Always verify the nature of the drugs being compounded before selecting your primary engineering control.
- What is the difference between the Z-Series horizontal laminar flow hood and the Smarthood™?
The Z-Series horizontal laminar flow hood is a reliable, traditional clean air workstation built to deliver consistent ISO Class 5 HEPA-filtered airflow for non-hazardous sterile compounding environments. The Smarthood™ takes that foundation further by integrating advanced technology directly into the unit, including a built-in PC, workflow software, and enhanced monitoring capabilities designed to support modern pharmacy compounding operations. Where the Z-Series is an excellent choice for facilities seeking a straightforward, high-quality laminar flow solution, the Smarthood™ is purpose-built for compounding environments that want to streamline documentation, improve compliance tracking, and bring greater efficiency to their workflow, all within a single integrated system. The right choice between the two comes down to whether your facility needs a best-in-class traditional hood or a more connected compounding environment.
