Mobile BSL-2 Sprinter Van Laboratory for the Bahamas Agricultural Food Safety Authority (BAHFSA)
The Bahamas Agricultural Health and Food Safety Authority (BAHFSA) partnered with Germfree to solve a long-standing gap in agricultural and food safety testing across the Bahamian islands. With nearly 700 family islands to serve, BAHFSA needed a biosafety solution that could operate in remote locations without sacrificing laboratory-grade standards. Germfree delivered a BSL-2 Sprinter Van mobile laboratory to support BAHFSA's veterinary and plant sample workflows. From kickoff to deployment, this entire project was completed in under seven months.
Project features
Size: Sprinter Van Platform
Layout configurations: BSL-2 Sprinter Van Laboratory, custom bench tops tailored to BAHFSA’s workflow
Facilities/Equipment: BSL-2 mobile laboratory with utility provisions for processing and analytical equipment
The challenge
BAHFSA faced serious limitations in its ability to conduct independent testing for veterinary and plant samples across the roughly 700 islands that make up the Bahamas. Without on-site laboratory capabilities, samples had to be sent off-island for analysis, causing delays and logistical headaches that affected response times and regulatory oversight. The authority needed a solution that could move between islands, operate in remote and potentially off-grid environments, power specialized processing equipment, and still meet BSL-2 biosafety containment standards.
The answer
Germfree supplied a BSL-2 Sprinter Van mobile laboratory configured specifically for BAHFSA’s needs. Using one of Germfree’s established base product designs, the team added custom bench tops and utility provisions to match BAHFSA’s testing workflows, allowing for a fast turnaround without starting from scratch. This approach allowed Germfree to go from design approval to a completed unit in less than four months, a timeline that would not have been achievable with a fully custom build.
The unit was designed to operate in the kinds of conditions BAHFSA regularly works in, including remote locations with limited infrastructure. Utility provisions were built in to support the specific processing and analytical equipment BAHFSA relies on, making the van a fully functional laboratory that travels with the team rather than requiring samples to travel to a fixed facility.
After receiving the purchase order in March 2025, the unit shipped in September 2025 and was installed in October 2025. The mobile laboratory now gives BAHFSA the ability to bring BSL-2 testing capabilities directly to the islands where samples are collected, reducing reliance on outside facilities and strengthening the region’s capacity for independent agricultural and food safety testing across the Caribbean.
