GFRP

To meet demands across a wide range of industries and applications, Arcoplast developed four distinct GFRP panel types. Each is manufactured from high density, glass fiber reinforced polymer and finished with the Arcoplast GelCoat surface: durable, ultra smooth, and impermeable, with a high gloss finish that holds up over time.

The GFRP Panel Range

GFRP Classic: The strongest panel system in the Arcoplast range, available in 5mm, 9.5mm, and 12.5mm. Built from a solid core matrix of high density, glass fiber reinforced polymer, GFRP Classic is designed for high containment wall and ceiling primary barriers.

GFRP Lead Shield: Available in 12.5mm and 19mm, GFRP Lead Shield is built for radiology rooms, with an embedded layer of lead providing X-ray and gamma ray radiation shielding.

GFRP Steel Core: A 19mm wall and ceiling panel built with an embedded steel mesh for maximum security, designed for high impact resistance.

GFRP Ultra HD: A heavy duty, 19mm panel built for wall and ceiling applications that need enhanced impact resistance.

Installation

Most GFRP wall and ceiling installations require no pre-engineering. The Arcoplast dry build method keeps the process clean and efficient, generating minimal dust and waste, with no complex on-site preparation like surface coatings, sanding, painting, or long drying times.

Repurposing or modernizing a facility is just as straightforward. Ready to install GFRP panels attach directly to the existing surface using A-2020 structural adhesive, and after four hours, A-1010 Bio-Seal seals and finishes the panel joints. Before attaching panels to any surface, confirm it’s clean and able to support the new panels.

  • Back Plate Lining System (5mm, 9.5mm, 12.5mm, 19mm): Lining or relining a facility is quick and clean. GFRP panels and back plates attach directly using A-2020 structural adhesive, with A-1010 Bio-Seal sealing and finishing the joints and seams. Fasteners secure the back plate or spline to the substrate or framing without penetrating the barrier surface. Before attaching panels to any surface, confirm it’s clean and able to support them.
  • Spline System (9.5mm, 12.5mm, 19mm): Seismic and non-seismic corner and wall splines position GFRP panels using fasteners and VHB tape, with A-2020 adhesive bonding the panels and spline assembly to the framing. A-1010 Bio-Seal finishes the joints, forming a seamless, single membrane barrier.
  • Direct Attach: Fixtures and MEP devices attach directly to the primary barrier using A-2020 adhesive and A-1010 Bio-Seal, with fasteners and brackets as needed. Once fixed, a fixture can only be removed by cutting the panel.
  • Penetrations: A-1010 Bio-Seal forms an air and water tight, seamless seal around any penetration in the barrier.
  • Repair: Accidental damage can be repaired in situ, restoring the barrier to new condition.

Built to Last

GFRP primary barriers are built for a long service life, maintaining structural integrity without the need for replacement. The surface resists physical impact, chemicals, high humidity, and toxic saline environments, and it doesn’t delaminate, flake, shed, peel, or separate, keeping a continuous, smooth surface for the life of the barrier.

That durability also means low maintenance. GFRP holds up to rigorous cleaning methods, including mop and bucket, high pressure wash downs, chlorine dioxide, formaldehyde gas, and hydrogen peroxide vapor, standard procedures across life sciences, biosecurity, biosafety, medical, pharmaceutical, and food and beverage facilities, all without requiring rejuvenating maintenance programs. The result is a barrier built to support continuous operations and consistent production quality.

Lead shield
GFRP Lead Shield

GFRP Lead Shield panels protect occupants and the working environment for the full life cycle of the laboratory. They’re effective specifically against gamma rays and X-rays.

Laboratories often need different thicknesses of lead shielding to attenuate primary radiation beams and secondary stray radiation. GFRP Lead Shield panels are manufactured in two panel thicknesses and three lead sheet thicknesses to meet that range.

Manufacture

GFRP Lead Shield panels are built without a laminated construction method. Instead, manufacturing relies on a wetting out process for glass fiber and resin, applied in multiple layers to reach the specific thickness, strength, and mechanical properties each panel needs.

Lead sheets are incorporated into the panel during that same process. As the panel cures, glass fiber mats, fire rated resin, and lead sheeting fuse together into a single unit, fully encapsulating the lead shielding in a permanently sealed panel.

GFRP Lead Shield panels feature the Arcoplast high gloss GelCoat antimicrobial surface, available in most PMS colors, with Pristine White as the standard.

Handling

Panels are safe to handle, since the lead sheeting is fully encapsulated inside the panel core. When trimming or cutting an Arcoplast Lead Panel, all stipulations from architects and engineers, along with health and safety precautions, must be followed.

Installation

Panels install using the Arcoplast dry construction method, fixed to the framing or substrate with a combination of A-2020 structural adhesive, splines, and or back plates. Fasteners and VHB tape locate and hold the splines and panels in position while the adhesive cures, a process that takes at least four hours.

Ready to install Lead Panels require no surface preparation. A soft plastic film protects the surface during installation and peels back before the panels are sealed and finished with A-1010 Bio-Seal. Once cured, three days later, the result is a seamless primary barrier built to ABSL-3, BSL-3, BSL-3Ag, and BSL-4 specifications.

Seams and Panel Joints: At the union joint, where two panels meet, lead shielding wraps around all sides of the metal stud. See shop drawing.

MEPs and Penetrations: A chicane, a series of boxed blind corners, allows MEPs like cables and amenities to enter the room without letting X-rays escape.

Overview

Security and secure storage are integral to a facility’s day to day operations, covering toxic and reactive chemicals, flammable goods, incompatible substances, storage temperature and flash point requirements, explosive materials, drugs, and protection against forced entry.

GFRP Steel Core is a 19mm solid core panel made of glass resin with an embedded steel wire mesh security barrier, finished with the Arcoplast high gloss GelCoat surface and available in most PMS colors, with Pristine White as the standard. The panel is built to withstand heavy impact and impair forced entry, within limits, and is applicable to secure storage rated up to CL3, PC3, ABSL-3, BSL-3, PC4, and BSL-4.

GFRP Steel Core panels are built without a laminated construction method. Manufacturing relies on a wetting out process for glass fiber and resin, applied in multiple layers, with steel wire mesh incorporated during the same process. As the panel cures, glass fiber mats, fire rated resin, and steel wire mesh fuse together into a single unit, fully encapsulating the mesh in a permanently sealed panel.

Installation

Panels install using the Arcoplast dry construction method. A-2020 structural adhesive bonds splines and or back plates to the framing, while fasteners and VHB tape locate and hold the panels in position as the adhesive cures, a process that takes at least four hours. A-1010 Bio-Seal then seals and finishes the panels, and once fully cured, three days later, the result is a seamless primary barrier built to ABSL-3, BSL-3, BSL-3Ag, and BSL-4 specifications.

Applications

GFRP panels form the basis of design for some of the most sophisticated cleanrooms and high containment facilities in the world. Involvement typically starts at the earliest planning stages and continues through final construction, working alongside A&E teams, lab designers, and construction crews to meet each facility’s specific requirements. That process draws on 40 years of hands-on experience, along with a network of specialists across the industry when a project calls for it.

Once construction is complete and the facility is certified, the primary barrier’s working life begins. It has to meet operational standards, maintain 24/7 air pressure, and hold up under constant cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization, and to date, GFRP primary barriers have a 100% pass rate.

GFRP seamless primary barriers are installed across a wide range of industries and scientific facilities, including life sciences, health, university research departments, IT, and industrial production.

Biosecurity Laboratories: Safety and security are paramount in these critical environments. GFRP’s ultra smooth surface minimizes microbial attachment, reduces the risk of contamination, and improves the efficacy of cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization.

High Impact Zones in Vivariums: In areas where animals are housed and handled, surfaces must withstand constant wear and impact. GFRP primary barriers are built to endure harsh working conditions, making them well suited to high demand environments.

Food and Beverage Wet Rooms: Hygiene and cleanliness come first in food and beverage processing. GFRP’s ultra smooth GelCoat surface is impervious to moisture and resists microbial activity, supporting efficient cleaning and sterilization.

Toxic High Saline Cleanrooms: Facilities exposed to corrosive or saline substances need materials built to withstand harsh conditions. GFRP primary barriers resist corrosion and chemicals, stay impervious to moisture, and hold up in both wet and dry toxic environments.

Additional information

Dedicated: A primary barrier built entirely from the GFRP panel system. Dedicated GFRP barriers offer strong shear strength and impact resilience, making GFRP the recommended system for BSL-4 laboratories.

Hybrid: A primary barrier built from a combination of GFRP, Acryloyl, and or GFRMC. Every project comes with its own design and construction requirements, and hybrid systems offer a versatile way to establish specialized areas within a facility. Combining GFRP 9.5mm and 12.5mm panels with Acryloyl brings several benefits, including cost, while GFRP Ultra or Steel Core can be added where extreme impact resistance is needed. Lead shielding applies specifically to radiology, where GFRP is used only in areas with no primary or secondary radiation exposure.

The manufacture of all Arcoplast GFRP panels consists of the wetting out glass fiber resin process. This is done in multiple applications to achieve a specific thickness, strength, and physical mechanical properties, resulting in the finished panel manufactured to an exact specification.

Does not support microbial activity, bacteria, mildew, or fungus.

  • Panel Color: Available in most pantone (PMS) colors. Standard color is pristine white.
