Location:
King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Saudi Arabia

Advanced mobile lab for rapid disease response

When it comes to combating the spread of infectious diseases, time is of the essence. Germfree was tasked with developing a BSL2 and BSL3 mobile laboratory that could be rapidly deployed during major events and outbreaks in Saudi Arabia.
Project features

Layout configurations: BSL-2 and BSL-3 mobile laboratory, anteroom, mechanical room, and storage spaces

Facilities/Equipment: Class III glove box in the BSL-3 lab, and two Class II BSCs in the BSL-2 lab, each provided with rapid transfer ports, pass-box and a pass-through double door autoclave

The challenge

We designed a portable, adaptable lab meeting BSL-2 and BSL-3 safety requirements for any location.

The answer

The BSL-3 Mobile Laboratory was both designed and built by Germfree, as a Diagnostic and Analytical Lab, for King Abdulaziz University, is a mobile lab suite with BSL-3 and BSL-2 laboratories, an anteroom/administration room, a mechanical room and storage spaces. The lab is housed in a semi-truck with retractable parts that maximize the workspace and ensure high adaptability to different locations. The lab features Class III glove boxes and Class II BSCs, as well as RTPs, pass boxes, and a double-door autoclave that allow for the safe transfer of samples and waste between the BSL-3 and BSL-2 labs.

Germfree designed and constructed the mobile lab specifically for King Abdulaziz University Hospital with the goal of using it during major events in Saudi Arabia, including the Hajj, and to provide rapid outbreak response in the event of a health crisis. The lab’s primary containment systems meet the safety requirements of BSL-3 and BSL-2 laboratories, allowing for safe handling of highly infectious pathogens.

Overall, Germfree has created an advanced mobile laboratory that meets the highest safety standards for handling highly infectious pathogens while being highly adaptable and mobile. The BSL-3 Diagnostic and Analytical Laboratory is a testament to Germfree’s expertise in designing and constructing biocontainment equipment to meet its customers’ needs.

This facility was built using technologies seen in our current mobile biocontainment labs, click here to learn more about our Mobile Biocontainment Labs.
