Containerized BSL-2 Lab: Safeguarding Hawaiian Agriculture Through Advanced Pathogen Research

Germfree designed and delivered a Containerized BSL-2 Laboratory for use in Hawaii, enabling advanced research and management of plant pathogens to protect local agriculture and support food security.
Project features

Size: 40ft x 8ft x 9.5ft shipping container platform.

Layout configurations: Containerized bioGO BSL-2 Mobile laboratory including separated rooms such as entry area, anteroom, and laboratory.

The challenge

Germfree was selected to design and fabricate a containerized BSL-2 laboratory, tailored to USDA regulations and BSL-2 specifications. This facility ensures robust biosecurity for the study and management of plant pathogens.

The answer

Germfree provided an innovative solution by designing and manufacturing a containerized BSL-2 laboratory built into a containerized area.  Hawaii acquired this containerized BSL-2 laboratory to enhance its capabilities in monitoring plant pathogens. The study of plant pathogens and pathogens in agriculture is crucial for learning and addressing challenges unique to the region.

Some key activities performed in the Germfree made lab were Pathogen Detection, Pathogen Culture and Isolation, Epidemiological studies, Research and Development of new diagnostic assays and disease management strategies, and local outreach to local farmers and agricultural extension services.

This containerized BSL-2 Laboratory in Hawaii, constructed by Germfree, plays a crucial role in detecting, researching, and managing plant pathogens affecting agriculture in the region. Its portable design offers enhanced mobility, while its advanced features help the USDA safeguard the health and productivity of Hawaiian agriculture. This, in turn, supports local food security and the economy. This facility was built using Germfree’s proven mobile containerized platform, click here to learn more about our cleanrooms.
